What is Margin Account buying power and SMA?

SMA balances in your account are equity in excess (also called excess equity) of the required limits set by the broker/dealer. Balances in your account in excess of the required equity limits set by the broker/dealer are included as a notation in a “Special Memorandum Account” termed SMA. Customers are free to borrow this amount from the account in cash or can use the amount to buy additional securities. SMA can be used to buy other marginable securities only.  SMA is created only if the value of the account rises above the initial margin of 50% (or whatever initial margin amount is required by the broker-dealer). Purchases using SMA reduces the SMA balance.

If the account rises above 50% margin, for every dollar the account increases, SMA is credited 50 cents.

If the account declines in value, SMA is not reduced. It is locked at its value before the decline. Thus, the SMA may be borrowed,as long as the account is not taken below the maintenance level. There is a good reason for this unusual treatment in a declining market. Logic would dictate that as the market falls, SMA should decline. And this is exactly the way SMA was computed until the crash of 1929. As the market was crashing, SMA was being taken away from customers – and so was their ability to buy – accelerating the Crash. When you use SMA buying power in a declining market, it may result in a margin call. SMA also may trigger a margin call as your equity percentage drops below the required minimums.

If you have any questions, please contact GlobaLink customer service before entering any margin transactions.
